This painting depicts Alex's uncle from two perspectives: on the right, he is portrayed up close in a serious mood; on the left, he appears farther away, in miniature, with his head thrown back in laughter. Painted with three different kinds of paint on textured watercolor paper, the portrait balances the broad, impressionistic brushstrokes of the background washes with the finely detailed brushwork of the foreground.
