This portrait of Alex's grandmother, which he completed when she was in her nineties, is painted with gouache on textured paper. Blending traditional painting methods, he used only two paintbrushes for the entire work: a wide bristle brush (the type normally used for oil painting on canvas) for the larger areas of color, and a fine watercolor brush for the details of her features and hair.
